The 5th International Scientific Conference of the University of Garmian, entitled "Revitalising Historical and Cultural Gems for Dynamic and Sustainable Tourism Growth", was successfully held in collaboration with the University of Bologna (Italy) and the Garmian General Directorate of Tourism.
This prestigious academic event brings together 74 researchers from both within and beyond the Kurdistan Region and Iraq. A total of 33 scientific papers from 14 universities and academic institutions will be presented over the two-day conference, offering diverse insights into the intersections of cultural heritage, archaeology, and sustainable tourism.
The opening ceremony was attended by notable figures including Ms. Amal Jalal, President of the Kurdistan Regional Tourism Board; Assistant Professor Dr. Chia M. Hassan, President of Garmian Polytechnic University; Dr. Awat Omar, President of the Garmian Court of Appeal; members of the University of Garmian Council; faculty members, students, and administrative staff.
The conference commenced with a speech by Professor Dr. Arass F. Zainal, President of the University of Garmian, who highlighted the importance of joint scientific initiatives. He emphasized that “culture and history should become a driving force for the future—through preserving archaeological sites and promoting the tourism sector.”
Following the President’s address, speeches were delivered by the President of the Kurdistan Regional Tourism Board, the Italian Consul, the representative of the University of Bologna, and the Director of Archaeology and Culture of Garmian. Each underlined the significance of the conference in enhancing academic collaboration and preserving cultural heritage as a foundation for sustainable development.
